LifeBio Memory Research Results - Reduced Depressive Symptoms & Improved Staff's Knowledge of People

The LifeBio Memory life story and reminiscence therapy app is an iOS/Android app (used on smartphones or tablets). Caregivers for a person living with MCI or dementia utilize LifeBio Memory to help a loved one share background and care preferences with 200+ questions in 30+ topics inside. Organizations, serving seniors in senior living, nursing homes, adult day program, hospice, or home care, license LifeBio Memory to get to know new people in their care more quickly and easily in their own voice (or loved ones assist when necessary). LifeBio Memory is an evidence-informed reminiscence therapy approach that reduces depressive symptoms for people living with dementia. LifeBio Memory was funded by the National Institute on Aging’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to improve person-centered care and memory care. The app voice records the person and then LifeBio’s AI engine and human editors create Snapshots, Action Plans, and/or Life Story Books from the recordings that are extremely useful in care.

RESIDENT RESULTS (Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Communities)

100 residents ranged in age from 65 to 105 and were on average 85.82 years old (SD = 8.51). The study sought out people with mild or moderate dementia to participate.

  • Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging examined residents’ depressive symptomology using the 10-item CES-D short form and found a significant change from baseline (Mbaseline = 7.04, SD = 5.18) to follow-up (Mfollow-up = 6.09, SD = 5.06), with frequency of depressive symptomology lower at Time 2 [t(106) = 2.08, p = 0.020].
  • At Time 1, Resident's MMSE scores ranged from 14 to 30 with an average raw score of 21.06 (SD = 3.91) out of 30. At Time 2, Resident's MMSE scores ranged from 0 to 29 with an average raw score of 19.71 (SD = 4.80) out of 30.  (NOTE: In some cases, it was at least 6 months between T1 and T2 resulting in progression.)
  • Out of 100 total responses, 92 residents said “yes” they would recommend the LifeBio life story program to other residents.

STAFF RESULTS (Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Communities)
61 staff members were surveyed with a T1 and T2. At baseline, staff knew the residents they interviewed for an average of 18.33 months (SD = 17.61; range 0 to 96 months).

  • On the follow-up post-evaluations, staff were asked to rate their overall satisfaction with the LifeBio Memory program. A total of 8-items developed from the pilot and current study were rated on a 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree) scale. Staff scores ranged from 24 to 40, with an average score of 33.57 (SD = 5.00), indicating high satisfaction with the program.
  • On a scale from 1 (not at all well) to 5 (extremely well), when staff were asked how well they knew the resident’s life story, a significant difference was observed from baseline (M = 2.68, SD = 0.92) to follow-up (M = 3.58, SD = 0.93), as staff felt like they knew the resident’s life story better after participating in LifeBio MemoryTM [t(105) = -10.24, p < .001].
  • Additionally, a significant difference was observed when staff were asked how well they knew the resident’s care preferences at baseline (M = 2.76, SD = 0.90) and follow-up (M = 3.54, SD = 0.97), as staff felt they knew the residents’ care preferences better after participating in LifeBio MemoryTM  [t(106) = -8.91, p < .001].
